This Saturday, 18th March 2017, Centrala, one of the key spaces working with art from Eastern Europe, provides an opportunity to hear a presentation by curator of the 11th Kaunas Biennial Paulina Pukytė in a one-day event “The Gesture Of The Artist In Such A Time”. The main idea behind the seminar is tracking activities of contemporary woman-artist – a migrant, a nomad, a woman confronted with civilization changes, crisis, exclusion, post-war and post-communism traumas – who expresses herself in both ways: intimately and in a dialogue with great historical narratives. The central ambition of the seminar is to start a wider discussion on a condition of art and woman-artists in an age where social unrest and the discomfort with our social life in an anonymous mass society is felt from all sides. Other speakers include Ioana Marinescu, a visual artist of Romanian origin, Yelena Popova, a visual artist of Russian origin, Dr. Malgorzata Dawidek, a Polish born visual artist, writer and art historian, and others.

In her talk Paulina Pukytė will present her curatorial project of the upcoming 11th Kaunas Biennial, which is based on her own art practice, as well as the need of art that engages directly with local context: in this instance, the new urgency of the issues related to public monuments in her country, as well as the world. The Biennial will seek to oppose conservative traditionalism and populist practice of removing-erecting, currently prevalent in the memory discourse of public art in Lithuania, as well as to stimulate and legitimise radically new, contemporary, conceptual, relevant ideas and strategies for commemoration by handing the monument making initiative directly to artists.
